Fresh Shoots: A Spring Awakening
The shift from winter to spring starts gently - soft light stretching further into the evenings, the first buds forming on the trees, snowdrops quietly flowering amongst the leaf litter.
Then a change comes in the air, if you're lucky - as we have been - some glorious spring sunshine and then the magic of spring is suddenly surging - early blossom on blackthorns, fresh green leaves unfurling in the hedge and the joyous return of colour to the landscape.
This past week, I’ve been watching the slow awakening of the season, both in my walks near home and during a visit to Stourhead National Trust in nearby Wiltshire.
Spring’s First Glimpses
One of my favourite signs of early spring is the golden celandines, their bright yellow petals catching the light, often appearing before the trees have fully leafed out. In the woods, willow catkins puff up like little pom poms, and beneath trees, carpets of crocuses bloom in vivid yellows, purples and whites. These fleeting moments of seasonal transition always bring fresh inspiration - not just for exploring outside, but for stitching new beginnings into my projects.
Introducing Fresh Shoots
Inspired by the tender green shoots of spring, I’m so excited to share my newest sock pattern: Fresh Shoots. This design captures the quiet energy of the season, with a subtle texture reminiscent of tiny shoots pushing up through the soil. The stitch pattern, known as Grass Stitch, beautifully reflects the quiet persistence of new growth in early spring.
I’ve chosen to showcase this pattern in Skein Queen Crush 4-ply, a beautifully hand-dyed yarn that brings out the organic movement of the design. Rachel at Skein Queen has carefully selected shades that highlight the stitch texture, from the softest blossom tones to the warmth and richness of early blooms - alongside deeper hues that reflect the shifting colours of the season.
Exclusive Pre-Order Access for Subscribers
I’ll be offering Fresh Shoots kits featuring Skein Queen Crush 4-ply, and email subscribers will get exclusive early access to pre-orders from Monday, 17th March, ahead of the official launch date of 20th March, the Spring Equinox. If you’d like to be among the first to get your hands on a kit, make sure you're signed up for my newsletter (sign up at the bottom of this page)!
The Gentle Return of Colour
The countryside is waking up, little by little. Daffodils are blooming en masse, wildflowers like dead-nettle and dandelions are beginning to flower, and the evening light now lingers just long enough for a few extra rows of knitting.
Spring is a season of renewal - perfect for casting on something fresh, whether it’s a new pair of socks or simply a shift in creative pace. I’d love to hear - what’s on your needles and hooks this spring? 🌿✨
